Official standards released for China Vegan Food Certification

Progress in the development of China’s first national vegan certification

On April 29, 2022, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Standards Committee officially announced the release of the China Vegan Food Certification standards (T/CGDF 00030-2022). The standards were developed in collaboration with the China Vegan Society, the CBCGDF Biological and Scientific Ethics Committee, and the Beijing Soybean Products Association.

As China's first domestic vegan food standard, the Vegan Food Certification aims to engage China's food industry in the effort to achieve the goals of the Healthy China 2030 plan and implement official recommendations and action plans on strengthening biodiversity protection and achieving peak carbon before 2030. We are excited to invite enterprises and research units to adopt this certification for their products.

In response to China's call to develop sustainable agriculture and food, the China Vegan Food Certification aims to systematically promote healthy, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly vegan food and contribute to the diversification of consumer food choices, improvement of mainstream diets, transformation of the food industry, and transition toward more sustainable development paths. The standard specifies the definition, basic principles, general requirements and food categories of vegan foods. It is applicable to enterprises or organizations engaged in food-related agriculture, research and development, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, sales, service, research and development, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, sales, service, consumption, and waste disposal.

The China Vegan Food Certification was developed with the support and input of domestic and foreign organizations from across the food industry chain. Co-creators of the Vegan Food Certification include Swedish oat milk giant Oatly, Hong Kong-based vegan food platform Green Monday, Dutch plant milk brand Upfield, Shanghai plant-based food technology brands Hey Maet and MetaMeat, Chinese vegan restaurant locator app VegRadar, Shanghai Tiansu Catering Management Co.'s vegan restaurant Green Friday, vegan seasoning brand HONA Organics, the Beijing Soybean Product Association, tea extract innovator Depure, ecological agriculture enterprise Fenggui Group, Shaanxi Natural Light Ecological Agriculture Technology Company, and Yunnan-based organic farm and event space Veggie Ark.

We look forward to working with more enterprises and organizations to usher in a greener, kinder, and more sustainable and biodiverse future by promoting vegan diets and lifestyles.
