Explore vegan food around the world

Eating Plants is a six-part documentary series exploring the plant-based trend that's taking the world by storm. Filmmakers Mick McIntyre and Kate Clere take us on a round-the-globe tour of plant-based culture in America, Germany, Israel, the UK, China, and Australia and introduce us to the experts and entrepreneurs who are creating plant-based alternatives.

Each episode is filmed in top vegan culinary destinations with a special host who introduces us to the traditional and innovative plant-based foods of their local region.

With new plant-based products hitting the shelves every day, American celebrity host Katie Cleary gives us a first-hand look at how these products are made and where to find them. Katie goes on a search to find the best health advice on how to reverse disease, how to bring up your baby vegan and trials exciting new vegan alternatives that best shape a plant-based diet.

Eating Plants Germany · 13:15-13:45

German YouTube celebrities Gordon Proux and Aljosha Muttardi trial the delicious local food of Berlin, one of the world’s vegan hot spots. They learn how to fill a pantry from the world's first vegan supermarket chain and what’s best to eat when you are a plant-based muscle builder. They have fun learning cooking tips from the best vegan chefs in Germany.

Eating Plants Israel · 12:45-13:15

Israel’s renowned chef and food critic Ori Shivat wanders through the colorful streets of Tel Aviv, finding all the vegan delights. Ori visits the local farmers market learning the tips of local vegan cuisine, both ancient and modern, from running endurance marathons on a plant-based diet to filling school lunch boxes, making vegan omelets and challah, and reversing hereditary health issues.

Celebrity host Lucy Watson explores why some of the UK's oldest traditions that have gone plant-based. Discovering the vegan artistry behind milk, beer, pizzas, and fine french pastry. During this episode, we visit a vegan soccer team and a vegan radio show before ending the day in a vegan pub.

Hosted by the China Vegan Society's former executive director Nancy Zhou, and featuring an exclusive interview with CVS founder Jian Yi, Eating Plants China is a highlight not to be missed! From the age-old culture of tofu-making to trendy farm-to-table vegan restaurants in bustling Beijing, Nancy takes us on a tour of the ancient and modern plant-based cultures shaping the China we know today.

Eating Plants Australia · 20:00-20:30

Vegan food has fueled some of Australia's top athletes. In this episode, our Aussie international celebrity host Martin Dingle Wall gets advice on the benefits of maintaining peak condition through plants. From fast food to fine cuisine, plant-based weddings, and delicious vegan cakes, this episode gives audiences a taste of Australia with a plant-based twist.

After the final film screening, Eating Plants directors Mick McIntyre and Kate Clere will join us in Zoom for a fireside chat with Eating Plants China host Nancy Zhou and China Vegan Society founder Jian Yi.

 

The speakers

 

Mick McIntyre

Co-director, Eating Plants; cofounder, Second Nature Films

Mick McIntyre is a passionate advocate for animals and an award-winning filmmaker. His work includes the feature films Kangaroo: A Love-Hate Story, Yogawoman, What to do about Whales?, and Eating Plants, a six-part docuseries exploring the plant-based food trend that’s growing around the world. Mick combines his work as a filmmaker with giving his time fighting for wildlife protection. He is Director of Whales Alive and for over 20 years has campaigned to end whaling. In 2019 he co-founded Kangaroos Alive, a nonprofit dedicated to the ethical treatment of kangaroos. Mick has been a vegan for 25 years.

 

Kate Clere

Co-Director, Eating Plants; cofounder, Second Nature Films

Kate Clere is a multi-award winning filmmaker and TV Series creator who brings together key international social and environmental issues with beautiful cinematic storytelling. Her award winning TV series included Eating Plants and films include Kangaroo: A Love-Hate Story, Gaining Ground, Yogawoman, and What to do About Whales?. Her work has featured in cinemas and festivals worldwide and received positive reviews in the NY Times, LA Times, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, BBC, and many more. Kate has worked campaigning for animals and a vegan lifestyle over the past two decades and is Co-Director of the NGO Kangaroos Alive.

 

Jian Yi

Founder and President, the China Vegan Society and the Good Food Fund (CBCGDF)

Jian Yi is an independent filmmaker and food activist who participated in the production of Eating Plants China. In 2008 he founded the IFChina Original Studio, a citizen participatory media project, and in 2017 he founded the Good Food Fund, which leads initiatives promoting the transformation to a healthy and sustainable food system in China and globally. In 2021 he launched the China Vegan Society as a special project under the China Biodiversity Conservancy and Green Development Foundation dedicated to growing and empowering China's vegan community. He is currently studying animal law at Harvard University.

 

Nancy Zhou

Founder, Sustainable China 永续企盟; Host, Eating Plants

A Beijing-based vegan advocate, Nancy serves as the local host for Eating Plants China. During her 10-year career in the education industry, Nancy founded the social enterprise RedThread and the education nonprofit EduThread in the United States. In China, she founded the Beijing Vegan Community, oversaw the launch of the China Vegan Society, and founded the CSR consulting company Sustainable China. In the Eating Plants documentary series, Nancy hosted the China episode, introducing viewers to the highlights of China's traditional and modern vegan culture.

This event is hosted by Earth Hour, a community that advocates and takes action for environmental protection and sustainability by engaging the public with visual media. Earth Hour began as a campaign inviting people to turn off the lights and watch environmental documentaries. Along with regular sustainable film screenings, Earth Hour organizes and co-organizes a variety of community events, including the Ordinary People Art Festival. Earth Hour hopes to open people's eyes to the importance of sustainability and inspire them to take action and achieve real change.

Max Xiong

Eating Plants was translated by Max Xiong. A vegan educator and public speaker, Max also translated the documentary Dominion from English into Chinese. He hosts his own Chinese vegan podcast and speaks about health and environment-related topics at elementary schools. He is also a former nutrition consultant for the University Vegetarian Alliance.
