Removing the blinders: talking to non-vegans about animal justice
Online (Zoom) · Saturday, December 3
14:00-15:00 (Beijing Standard Time)
Hear animal advocacy influencers from China, France, and Japan share their stories and strategies
Wherever we are in the world, we’re in a place where animals are being used for food, clothing, entertainment, and medicine. To end the suffering and exploitation of the animals around us, we need to start by opening people’s eyes to the true consequences of their choices. But this is easier said than done. The people we reach out to may not be ready to hear our message. We may encounter strong cultural beliefs about the roles animals should play in our lives or powerful institutions trying to protect their interests by blocking or drowning out calls for change. But wherever we are, there is always a way to be a part of the solution.
How to be a part of the solution
We’ve invited three animal advocates influencing large audiences in China and around the world to share their experiences and discuss advocacy strategies for different contexts:
How does advocating for animals in Asia differ from doing so in the west?
What can we do to advocate for animals, and how can we be more effective?
Who is making the greatest advancements in the animal advocacy field, and what are they doing?
What are the biggest challenges and opportunities animal advocates currently face?

He currently works as a video producer at Surge Activism, is an advisor for the Vegan Hacktivists, and was recently featured on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah to talk about animal rights and his latest independent documentary "How Conscious Can A Fish Be?".
Billy Zheng
Videographer and blogger, Starch Boy (淀粉男孩)
One of China's most outspoken youth animal advocates, Billy began creating educational and thought-provoking vegan advocacy content as a university student. After starting with explainer videos, he went on to launch a direct debate project inviting strangers on the street to explain their thinking about how we use animals. Billy hopes that through engaging videos about animal welfare and veganism, along with sincere and open discussion, he can help people to see animals as sentient beings that deserve respect and not as objects to be consumed.
